Pakistani travellers often search for an individual “China visit visa” and expect to apply with only a hotel booking, return ticket and bank statement. The official Pakistan instructions describe a Group L visa route for tourists visiting China in a group of at least five people, supported by an Invitation Letter for Tourist Group issued through a duly authorized tourism office in China, usually on the request of a local Chinese travel agency.
This is different from an M business visa and different from Q or S family-visit visas.
Who should use Group L?
Group L is for genuine tourism, such as:
- Beijing, Great Wall and Shanghai sightseeing
- Cultural and historical tours
- Family holiday groups without a qualifying resident relative invitation
- Organized Muslim-friendly or halal tours
- Leisure extensions that are not presented as business meetings
A traveller attending the Canton Fair or meeting suppliers should normally apply under the business purpose and M category rather than disguising the trip as tourism.
Minimum group size
The published official instruction says at least five people. Group composition, travel-together conditions and operational requirements should be confirmed with the authorized Chinese receiving travel agency and the relevant Visa Centre before payment, because implementation can change.
Do not use old or foreign-country guidance that automatically applies a different minimum to Pakistani applicants.
Who issues the tourist-group invitation?
The invitation is issued by a duly authorized tourism office in China, usually the relevant local Culture and Tourism Bureau following a request from the local Chinese travel agency.
A Pakistani tour company generally works with an authorized Chinese partner. A normal hotel, friend, unlicensed guide or unrelated factory cannot simply issue the official tourist-group invitation.
Typical application workflow
1. Join a genuine organized group
Confirm destination, dates, minimum members, hotels, transport, guide, meals and cancellation policy.
2. Provide passport information accurately
The group invitation and list must match the passport and application form.
3. Chinese partner obtains the authorized invitation
The receiving agency applies through the relevant tourism authority.
4. Complete the online visa application
Select the correct location based on permanent residence, upload required documents and submit the application.
5. Correct any preliminary-review request
A Rejected status may mean another upload or modification is required.
6. Submit passports and originals after online approval
Print the Visa Application Certificate and follow the Centre’s offline process.
7. Travel according to the approved group plan
The organizer should explain whether the group must arrive, travel and depart together and what happens if a member cancels.
Tourist visa versus family visit
Do not automatically use Group L when the real purpose is visiting relatives.
Q1 or Q2
These categories apply to family members of Chinese citizens or foreigners with Chinese permanent residence. Q1 is for long-term reunion over 180 days; Q2 is for a short visit of up to 180 days.
S1 or S2
These categories apply to qualifying relatives visiting foreigners who reside in China for work, study or other permitted long-term purposes. S1 is long term; S2 is short term.
The invitation, inviter’s ID or passport/residence document and proof of relationship are central to Q and S applications. Pakistani relationship certificates may require an apostille.
Tourist-group fees

“Every group visa has the same travel rules”
The organizer must confirm the exact implementation, group list and entry/departure conditions.
