A first China business trip is examined differently from a routine repeat visit because the applicant has no previous Chinese entry record to support the proposed purpose. The safest approach is to build one coherent story: who you are, what business you operate, why you need to visit China, who is inviting you, where you will go and how you will pay for the trip.
This checklist is designed for genuine Pakistani importers, retailers, e-commerce sellers and SME manufacturers applying for an M visa for the Canton Fair, supplier meetings or factory sourcing.
Step 1: Confirm that M is the correct visa
An M visa is for commercial and trade activities. Examples include:
- Attending the Canton Fair as a buyer
- Meeting suppliers
- Visiting factories
- Negotiating orders
- Inspecting products before purchase
- Discussing distribution or manufacturing agreements
Tourism, family reunion, employment and study require different categories. Do not describe a holiday as a factory trip or use an M visa to hide employment.
Step 2: Select the correct application location
The official consular division routes applicants according to permanent residence:
- Islamabad route: Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan
- Karachi route: Sindh and Balochistan
- Punjab excluding Rawalpindi: handled on behalf of the Lahore Consulate through the relevant Lahore/Islamabad process described by the official system
Choose the corresponding location in the online portal. Selecting the wrong centre can cause return or delay.
Step 3: Prepare the common documents
- Passport valid for more than six months
- At least one blank visa page
- Copy of passport information page
- Online visa application and confirmation documents
- Recent qualified digital photograph
- Copy of front and back of Pakistani CNIC
- Current and requested old passports
- Name-change evidence with the required apostille if the current name differs
- Police Character Certificate with the required apostille or accepted verification
The current online procedure asks applicants to upload the documents first and wait for preliminary approval before submitting the passport and originals.
Step 4: Obtain the correct M-visa invitation route
Canton Fair visitor
Use the official Canton Fair Invitation Letter obtained through the Buyer E-Service Tool.
Supplier or factory visit
The Chinese inviting entity may arrange an Invitation Letter (TE) or Verification Letter. A Verification Letter should be accompanied by an ordinary company invitation.
Exemption case
Only applicants meeting the official exemption conditions may rely on an ordinary invitation without TE or Verification Letter. The published exemptions include qualifying government personnel and applicants with more than three documented China visits since 1 January 2016.
A first-time private business traveller should not assume exemption.
Step 5: Build a complete ordinary company invitation
Even where the primary document is TE or a Verification Letter, the company invitation should be complete where required:
- Applicant’s full name, gender, date of birth and passport number
- Purpose of the business visit
- Arrival and departure dates
- Cities and sites to be visited
- Relationship between applicant and inviter
- Who pays the expenses
- Full legal Chinese company name
- Address and valid contact number
- Formal legal seal
- Signature and date
Step 6: Prepare six months of personal bank evidence
The official M-visa guidance specifies a personal bank statement covering the latest six months. The closing balance should cover the real stay, with a benchmark of at least US$100 per day or equivalent PKR.
A ten-day trip therefore needs at least the equivalent of US$1,000 under this benchmark, but applicants should also consider flights, hotels and actual travel costs. A balance that barely meets the mathematical threshold may still look weak if the trip is expensive or the account activity is inconsistent.
Use a genuine bank-issued statement. A company sponsorship letter, business bank statement or tax records may support the file, but they should not replace a specifically requested personal statement unless the official authority confirms otherwise.
Step 7: Prepare the itinerary and reservations
For a first trip, provide a clear route:
- Pakistan departure airport
- Arrival city
- Hotel names and dates
- Canton Fair phase and dates
- Factory visits or supplier meetings
- Yiwu, Foshan, Shenzhen or other extension
- Return flight
The official instructions recommend round-trip booking information and hotel reservations, and specifically mention them for first-time visitors in certain exemption situations. Avoid non-refundable purchases before the visa decision where possible.
Step 8: Prove the business purpose
The official list allows additional documents to be requested. Practical supporting evidence can include:
- Pakistani company registration
- NTN or tax documents
- Business bank account evidence
- Store, website or marketplace profile
- Supplier correspondence
- Product catalogue
- Previous import documents
- Purchase orders or quotations
- Chamber membership
- Canton Fair product shortlist
These are not identical mandatory requirements for every applicant, but they make the purpose easier to understand.
Step 9: Complete the online form accurately
Prepare five years of work history, highest education, family addresses and exact inviter information. Enter the Chinese company’s legal name, not only the salesperson’s name. Explain every Not Applicable selection when the portal asks.

- Passport vs form

Step 10: Wait for online approval before visiting the Centre
After submission, monitor email. Rejected status can mean a correction is required. Approved online means you may submit the passport and original documents; it is not final visa approval.

- Using a company name that differs from the licence
- Showing a sudden unexplained bank deposit
