China Invitation Letters for Pakistanis: TE, Verification, Canton Fair and QR Codes

Reviewed 3 August 20268 min read

An invitation letter is one of the most misunderstood parts of a China visa application from Pakistan. Applicants often use the words "invitation," "verification," "barcode" and "TE letter" as though they mean the same document. They do not.

The correct invitation depends on visa category, trip purpose and applicant history.

The main invitation types

1. Ordinary invitation letter from a Chinese company

This is a letter issued by the real Chinese organization inviting the applicant for business or another qualifying purpose. It should be printed on the company's letterhead where available and carry a valid company or approved foreign-affairs seal.

For an M or F visa, it must include complete invitee, trip and company information.

An ordinary company invitation is not automatically enough for every first-time Pakistani business applicant. It may accompany a Verification Letter, or be used under a permitted exemption route.

2. Invitation Letter (TE)

A TE Letter is an official invitation document arranged by the Chinese inviting party through authorized Chinese government channels. It is different from a normal company letter.

The applicant should not create, edit or buy a scanned template. The Embassy verifies these documents.

3. Verification Letter of Invitation

This is another official invitation document issued through authorized Chinese channels. Under the current Pakistan instruction, a Verification Letter must be submitted together with an ordinary invitation letter from the real Chinese inviting organization.

4. Canton Fair Invitation Letter

The official Canton Fair invitation is generated through the Canton Fair buyer system. The Canton Fair states that the invitation application is free of charge. It can be used to support an M visa.

The buyer's passport, company and travel details should match the visa file.

5. China International Import Expo invitation

The official CIIE invitation is also recognized as an M-visa invitation route under the current instructions.

6. Tourist Group Invitation Letter

For Pakistani tourists applying under Group L, the current requirement is an Invitation Letter for Tourist Group issued by the authorized tourism office in China, usually through a local authorized Chinese travel agency. A normal hotel confirmation is not the same document.

7. Family invitation for Q or S visas

A Chinese citizen, permanent resident or eligible foreign resident can write an invitation for the relevant Q or S category. It must be supported by the inviter's identity/residence records and proof of relationship.

TE Letter versus Verification Letter

DocumentWhat it isAdditional ordinary letter?
Invitation Letter (TE)Official invitation issued through authorized Chinese channelsCurrent instruction treats TE itself as the official invitation route
Verification Letter of InvitationOfficial verification document issued through authorized Chinese channelsYes, submit with an ordinary invitation from the real Chinese organization
Ordinary company invitationDirect letter from the Chinese companySufficient only in the circumstances permitted by the Embassy, or used alongside the Verification Letter

Because local implementation can change, the Chinese inviter should confirm the current issuing authority and format in its city.

When can TE or Verification Letter be exempted?

The current Embassy instruction lists two main exemption conditions for F and M applicants:

  1. Certain Pakistani government or official-institution employees travelling on a private passport marked "Government Officer" or "Government Employee," with the required apostilled NOC and financial evidence.
  2. Applicants who have visited China more than three times since 1 January 2016 and provide evidence of those entries, along with the required financial documents.

Even when exempt, the applicant still needs an ordinary invitation from the real Chinese organization.

A single previous China visit does not satisfy the stated "more than three times" condition.

Required content of an ordinary M/F invitation

Invitee details

  • Full name exactly as passport.
  • Gender.
  • Date of birth.
  • Passport number.

Visit details

  • Purpose of visit.
  • Intended arrival and departure dates.
  • Cities and places to be visited.
  • Relationship with the inviting organization.
  • Who will pay the expenses.

Inviting organization details

  • Accurate full legal name.
  • Telephone number.
  • Full address.
  • Formal legal seal or approved foreign-affairs seal.
  • Signature of legal representative or authorized inviter.
  • Date.

The company name on the invitation, business licence and visa form must match.

What is the "barcode" people talk about?

In Pakistani visa discussions, "barcode letter" may refer loosely to an official invitation document, a verification number or the barcoded Visa Application Certificate generated after online approval. It is not a precise official category.

Use the document's real name:

  • Invitation Letter (TE).
  • Verification Letter of Invitation.
  • Canton Fair Invitation Letter.
  • Visa Application Certificate.
  • Tourist Group Invitation Letter.

Do not accept a seller's claim that a visible barcode automatically proves authenticity.

QR code on the police certificate

The QR code requirement commonly discussed in current Pakistan applications relates to the police character/clearance certificate, not to replacing the business invitation.

The Embassy states that the police certificate must be apostilled by Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs if it does not contain a verifiable QR code. Applicants should scan the code themselves and confirm it displays the correct certificate.

A QR code that fails, opens another person's record or leads to an unrelated page can cause the application to be returned.

How to verify an ordinary Chinese company invitation

Ask for:

  • Chinese business licence.
  • Unified Social Credit Code.
  • Legal company name in Chinese and English.
  • Registered address.
  • Company landline or reachable contact.
  • Name and position of the signatory.
  • Clear official seal.
  • Email sent from a company domain where available.
  • Evidence of the commercial relationship or planned meeting.

Then check that the invitation company and visa-form inviter are identical.

ChinaChallo's China-side team can verify the legal company and invitation consistency for accepted delegates.

How to verify a Canton Fair invitation

  • Apply through the official Canton Fair buyer platform.
  • Use your own account and correct passport number.
  • View the application result inside the official system.
  • Do not depend on a screenshot sent by an unknown agent.
  • Ensure the fair session and phase match your itinerary.

The official application is free. Payment to a third party should be for its professional assistance, not for "buying" an official invitation.

Warning signs of a fake invitation

  • Seller promises guaranteed visa approval.
  • Company refuses to provide a business licence.
  • Company name differs across documents.
  • Contact number is unreachable.
  • Letter has no arrival or departure dates.
  • Seal is copied, rectangular without explanation, blurred or digitally pasted.
  • Passport number or spelling is wrong.
  • Invitation describes a factory meeting but no factory or product is identified.
  • Applicant is told to lie about purpose or employment.
  • Document is offered without any genuine relationship or trip.

Submitting a fake document can lead to refusal, future difficulty and legal consequences.

Invitation letter for a Canton Fair delegation

A properly coordinated delegation should align:

  • Delegate's passport details.
  • Pakistani business information.
  • Canton Fair registration.
  • Official fair or business invitation route.
  • Guangzhou dates and hotel.
  • Product category and phase.
  • Chinese contact information.
  • Return itinerary.

ChinaChallo should issue a document checklist and verify all spellings before the applicant submits online.

Family invitation requirements

For Q and S visas, the invitation should include inviter identity, China address, contact information, invitee details, relationship, dates, length of stay and expense source. It must be supported by the inviter's Chinese ID, permanent-resident card, passport, visa or residence permit as relevant, plus original relationship evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Can any Chinese company issue an ordinary invitation?

A real legal entity can issue a letter, but whether it is sufficient depends on the applicant's invitation route and exemption eligibility.

Is a Canton Fair invitation enough for an M visa?

It is a recognized invitation route, but the applicant must still provide common documents and any additional items requested.

Is the Canton Fair invitation free?

The official online application is free of charge.

Does a TE Letter need an ordinary invitation too?

The current instruction specifically requires an ordinary invitation with a Verification Letter. Applicants should still follow any case-specific request issued during online review.

Can I buy a TE Letter online?

Do not buy an invitation from an unknown source. It should be arranged by the genuine Chinese inviter through authorized channels.

Is a barcode proof that the letter is real?

No. Authenticate through the issuing system or authority and verify the company and application details.
